SUSTAINABILITY AND WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

You have either recently come across this term or have heard it so many times that you just want to understand what it is and why every industry wants to bank on it.

Let’s look at the definition of sustainability. While there are so many explanations out there, this one defines it the most accurately.

“Sustainability focuses on meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. The concept of sustainability is composed of three pillars: economic, environmental, and social—also known informally as profits, planet, and people.”

Defining the three pillars

Profit - Analyzing the environmental impacts of an organization through its products and policies. It means the way and organization affects the local, national and international economy through employment generation, wealth generation, fair trade, paying taxes, generating innovation. It’s important for an organization to not deal in anything that can harm the environment just to cut their costs and make some extra bucks.

Planet - The way an organization manufactures, sources its raw materials, the energy it produces to make the product, the kind of packaging and the end of the product life cycle should be in a way that it reduces the negative impact on the environment. An organization cannot be sustainable if it has a higher carbon footprint, uses toxic materials, generates waste, and causes deforestation and depletion of natural resources.

People – No organization can survive and grow without the support of its stakeholders. These are the employees, suppliers, shareholders, customers, communities, anyone who influences or is affected by the organization and help it function smoothly. You need to make sure your policies are in favour of them and the surroundings they live in.

Why should you care about sustainability?

As a consumer everything you do or consume has a direct or an indirect impact on you and your surroundings. It’s on you how you want that impact to be. The future can only be sustainable or nothing at all. Our world is not a place of infinite resources, we are only given how much we need but our greed and unending wishes of wanting more and more has made us overproduce and overconsume. The environmental problems you hear about everyday like pollution, increasing waste, carbon emissions, rising temperature, shortage of water, plastic pollution, these are all a result of our ignorance and lack of understanding to live in harmony with mother nature. There is no more a question of choosing to live sustainably. It is imperative if you want to see a future for yourself and the coming generation.

If you are an organization and you don’t think about sustainability as one of your core principles in everything you do, you might not survive for a long time because the world is changing and you probably won’t have the resources that you currently have. The new generation has become more aware and demands to use products that don’t harm the environment. Millennials wants to work for companies that have sustainability policies. A commitment to sustainability also helps an organization to cut costs by eliminating the use of extra resources, creating less waste and making the process more efficient and effective. Remember! Your product should not just benefit you but also solve world problems. Investing in the right technology, identifying the impact of your product from inception is the key to successfully achieve your sustainable goals and be a forward thinking organization.

It’s all about a mindset shift. We need more awareness on topics like sustainability, help people understand what it is and why it’s the only way for a secured future. Rethink about your current habits, broaden your thinking, and don’t just settle for what you were taught. Relearn, transform, innovate and expand your horizons.

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
– Albert Einstein, Physicist
